ABOUT ECLIPSE CHOIR

Eclipse Choir started in April 2015 when Jim put into motion his dream of setting up his own choir which would rehearse and perform a mix of modern and more classical songs in SATB (or for those not familiar with choral lingo–soprano, alto, tenor, bass).

Here we are nearly 10 weeks later and wholeheartedly getting ready to perform our debut gig.

The choirs will be singing songs from Bob Chilcott, Toto and Queen to the Kings Singers.

Eclipse is made up of two choirs groups that rehearse separately on Monday and Thursday nights, plus some small ensemble groups performing as well as one or two soloists. Please visit our website to find out more!

“I Miss You”, the Missing People Choir song

Missing People Choir

The story behind the Missing People Choir

The Missing People Choir formed in summer 2014 masterminded by Clare Cook from the Missing People charity and Jim.  Its mission was to bring together the families and loved ones of the missing as a choir, to start something new, to enjoy music and singing together, and thereby raise spirits, share stories, bring encouragement and hope to the group.

Soon afterwards an idea formed that the Missing People Choir should have its own song for their Christmas performance.

Peter Boxell, whose son Lee has been missing since 1988 wrote the lyrics to the song ‘I Miss You’ in tribute to his missing son. Jim, along with professional writer and arranger, Simon Rhodes, wrote the song in the studio here initially to perform at the Missing People Carol Service at St Martin-in-the-Field on December 8th 2014.

The performance

The choir had just six full rehearsals together with Jim before the concert, some of the singers had never sung in a choir before and for the majority, this would be their first ever public performance. Nevertheless they raised their game and got over their nerves to deliver an exceptional and moving performance on the night, which touched the hearts of many people there.

Here’s quite a highlight of my year. I worked with the Missing People Charity to create a choir made up of families who are suffering the loss of a loved one. Many of the members were singing for the first time in their lives and I’m very proud of their achievement. This was a powerful experience and has reached out to a lot of people.
I invite you to support the Missing People Charity by sharing this video with your friends but most importantly, your family.

Kingston Rock Choir Show: Sold Out and Sang Out

Well, well, well Kingston Rock Choir, what a show! All Saints Church in Kingston Marketplace was packed on Saturday 21st June – the summer solstice and a wonderful sultry night filled with good music. The choir and soloists covered nearly 30 songs in two hours, in three, four, five and six part harmonies, complete with some tricky dance routines, all from memory! Best of all, the audience loved it and were engaged all the way through, joining in and adding to the vibe and joy that singing and listening to Rock Choir brings.

“I really enjoyed the show last night. It was very well put together.”

Kingson Rock Choir Small Group

The choir raised their game for their big show, the small group songs were arresting, and the soloists wiped the floor with their numbers. Jim, his sound man, Will, and other helpers worked exceptionally hard to bring it all together on the night, for which we are all very grateful.

Kingston Rock Choir Solo

“Jim was brilliant in keeping the crowd engaged and involved all the way through.”

A special thanks goes to All Saints, who gave us the venue free, and kindly provided wine and juice at the interval. We are pleased to say the concert raised over £1600 for the ASK renovation campaign.

Recording a choir for TV

Jim took a break from his Rock Choir rehearsal in Kingston today to lead a one-off performance in front of the cameras who were recording a choir for TV. Thirty singers from the Wimbledon choir sang for their choir-mate who was unknowingly undergoing a 60-minute home makeover with Peter Andre for ITV.

Jim said, “Today Wimbledon Rock Choir excelled at singing Mr Blue Sky in all six voice groupings, with movements, under the ITV spotlight, Peter Andre’s star presence and only the 30 singers!!! Sweetest and smoothest sound!!! I live it when we hit this sound and am very proud and thankful to all who took part.”

James Hawkins and Peter Andre after recording a choir for TV
Oh yes! Mysterious girl!

Peter Andre was a lovely gentleman who kindly took loads of selfies with the group performing, including this cute pic with Jim.

The show is scheduled to air in November; quite a long wait, but it seemed to go down well so we hope the producers decide to use some of the footage.

Saturday choir workshop sparky and special

We were very excited to host James’s first All Singers Saturday choir workshop, which was held in Wimbledon on 29th March 2014. It was attended by nearly 200 amateur singers, who enjoyed a whole day of learning new arrangements of four songs by The Beatles and The Eagles. The day’s choir learned If I Fell, in a sweet 3-part harmony, followed by Because, a trickier, but lovely arrangement, in the morning. Then after lunch, they took on Peaceful Easy Feeling and Hotel California by The Eagles. The highlight of the afternoon was the accompaniment by a five piece band, so everyone got to experience singing with live instruments, as if to the original tracks themselves (clearly we couldn’t quite manage the original line ups…;-)

Happiness is ... singing in a choir
Happiness is Singing in a Saturday Choir Workshop!

“The whole day was wonderful but singing with a live band is always something special.”

“I felt I had learnt whilst having a good time.”

It was a relaxed atmosphere and happily some of our singers took up the chance to perform their own renditions with the band once the choir had performed all four songs together. We are very grateful to everyone who helped us on the day. A special mention to Becki, our work experience pupil from Coombe Girls School, who was there from start to finish. She also spent some time putting together these interesting facts about the songs we sang. I will upload them here shortly.

“My highlights were the great atmosphere throughout the day… Good to use a score and be taught more about music theory… The band… Jim’s sense of humour and energy.  The free pencil – obviously!”

The aim of the All Singers Saturday choir workshop was to give keen singers the chance to indulge themselves in a whole day of music and singing, with Jim teaching along a theme – this time using two legendary bands for inspiration – and we loved adding a spark and something more with the live musicians. We have received some great feedback and some really helpful and encouraging comments, so don’t worry if you missed this, we will be organising more. There are so many themes we could puruse, so why not drop us a suggestion of what you’d love below?

“I loved singing with the band. Enjoyed the choice of songs. Brilliant atmosphere.”

If you know somebody who loves singing for fun, for a challenge or pleasure, then please connect them to us. If you sign up to our mailing list, we will let you know as soon as the next workshop is announced.
